FAQs

Why do I need pelvic floor therapy?

We all have a pelvic floor, and sometimes we have dysfunction that occurs. This can result in leaking, pain, or other symptoms. Also, pregnancy and labor are significant events that impact our pelvic floor. If we train for a marathon and recover afterwards, why wouldn’t we do that and so much more for the “marathon” of pregnancy and delivery!

What does OT have to do with it?

As an occupational therapist (OT), my education focuses on helping people navigate their lives and the activities that occupy our day. That includes movement patterns, sexual function, bathroom habits, sleep and rest, play and exercise, social interactions, child rearing, and so much more. That gives me a unique perspective that other pelvic health therapists may not have.

Isn’t leaking normal (after a baby)?

Leaking is never normal. It may be common, but that is not the same as normal. Our body is meant to withhold pressure and keep our bodily fluids inside. There’s much we can do (without surgery, as well) to improve this!

How do I know if I’m constipated?

Here’s the “poop” story line I give - a normal bowel movement is as follows: you feel an urge begin in your lower tummy or rectal region, you are able to finish up whatever you’re doing, head to the toilet, sit down and generally your body does the work for you, meaning the intestines have a function where they assist pushing your bowel movement out. There’s not really a reason to strain, hold your breath, and push. A little “umph” is ok. If that’s not the general script, you’d do well with pelvic floor therapy!

Should I drink wine to have sex?

Some people have been told by doctors “Oh, just drink a little wine to relax you” if they have pain with sex. Um.. hello! That’s crazy town. There’s a lot of reasons you may have pain with sex, and we can help this improve -without having to be drunk for intimacy!

Do you take insurance?

Healthy Pelvy is a cash pay practice that is not contracted with insurance companies.
